Paint & Plumbing, oh my

Welcome to all my new followers!  I am so happy you decided to join me on my home decor (& more!) journey.  I don’t always know what I’m doing but we can learn together.  :)

I got several questions about the paint in my living room.  The color is Surrey Beige by Glidden.  It sometimes looks more green than beige but I like it either way.  I used it in my previous home as well.  The dining room is the same color.  The stripes are Tangier Island by Ralph Lauren which is in my hall, foyer, and kitchen.

Friday was a crazy day.  You just never know what is going to happen as a homeowner.  My husband went out to his car to get something late Thursday night and discovered water dripping from the ceiling in our garage.   It was coming from the kids’ bathroom above.  You could see watermarks where all the pipes in the ceiling are and there were spots where it looked like the drywall was about to bust.  Yikes?!  We turned off the water and left a message on our plumber’s voicemail so that we could get the first a.m. appointment.   Thank goodness Mr. C made that late night run to his car!!

It took the plumber most of the day to figure out the problem (don’t even ask- something to do with a seal and a pipe) but we lucked out because he was able to fix it without removing too much drywall.  We do have to have the wet drywall removed and replaced which we are doing asap so it doesn’t mold or rot.

I should probably backtrack here.  Mr. C, I do have to admit that DIY is not always the solution.  The toilet in the kids’ bathroom was flushing slowly a few days ago which was a sign of our plumbing problem.  I looked online for plumbing tutorials since I am really trying to embrace my inner Ms. Fix-it.  I wanted to get an auger from H.D. or Lowe’s and try to fix the toilet ourselves.  I gave Mr. C this big speech about all my blog friends who tackle such jobs without plumbers, etc.  Welllll, it turns out that the toilet wasn’t flushing properly because of a much bigger issue.   And lets just say me messing with it did not exactly help matters.

Oh, and right this very minute I have carpet cleaners at my house because the plumber’s bucket leaked a brownsomething all over our carpet.  Lets not think about what that brownsomething could be, huh?  Free carpet cleaning isn’t so bad especially since my carpet needed it anyway.

Lesson learned.  We are thankful that our problem was not the catastrophe it could have been had the water leaked all night.

Feel free to share a DIY mishap.  It might make me feel better. :)

Oh, and don’t worry.  Whatever was wrong with our pipes won’t happen to you.  Our plumber hadn’t seen it happen in his 20 years of plumbing so chances are you are safe.

  2. THanks for sharing the paint colors– I am in love with your striped wall!
Plumbing woes are the worst… our house is almost 30 years old, so you can imagine. :)

  3. People should also apply good maintenance practices which will definitely keep the plumber away for a while. From the above example, chances of blockages can be reduced if the strainer is kept clean at all times.

  7. Plumbing is very important in the whole process of housekeeping. It ensures the interrupted flow of water both to and from the home. If we can do the plumbing job with ourselves to lessen the expenses is much better. But plumbing is really a tough job. Good to know that there is a 24 hour plumbing services online that offer this kind of job.
