Built-In Swings

Dear Friends,
I am a dreamer.  I can churn out ideas as fast as the chocolates tumble down the conveyor belt in I Love Lucy .  However, turning those ideas from a thought bubble to reality is the hard part.  This one came to fruition with some help but I’m proud that I actually acted on a rather harebrained notion.

The kids’ biggest complaint since we moved to the new house?  No swings.  We had the Taj Mahal of wooden playsets at our old house.  Our new yard is less than half the size of the old one so we will not be embarking on the 8th wonder of the world this go around.   I couldn’t figure out how we could blend a swingset into the current landscape without compromising play space.

And then… an idea surfaced. What if I could somehow put swings up using the existing trees as anchors?

I got in touch with a guy in the area that has some experience with tree houses to see if he thought it was an option.  I sent him a crude idea of what I was thinking (below).

He came out to the house & I showed him my little plan on paper.  He was very receptive and made some suggestions to beef it up.   One week, a few hours, and $265 later here it is.

It blends right into the landscape.  The kids love it!  It didn’t cost an arm and a leg.  I think we could have built it ourselves (with my dad’s help) but I wanted someone with a real knowledge of trees to make sure it was as safe and secure as possible without doing any damage to our pines.   We did remove 3 small bushes and a couple of perennials underneath but that was it!   Sometimes my crazy schemes really do work!

  1. Nice solution! My parents actually did something similar in their backyard for the grandkids. It was great because when everyone had outgrown swings (*sad face) they just took it down.

  5. My parents have tree swings and the grandkids love them. I love your solution. I have issues with the big playsets. This is a wonderful idea to blend your playspace and your landscape!

  6. Erin,
This is fantastic! I think I am going to copy you but use tire swings. We just knocked down (sniff sniff!) our swing set because my kids are big, but we were all surprisingly sad and thought we’d try some tire swings! Thanks for the great idea! I love your site and the desk re-do is SO great!

    Continued success to you!
